Modified Atmospheric Packaging Market Analysis by Targeted Audience, Individual Share, Regional Study of Top Players, Growth rate, Application and Forecasts by 2027
Modified
atmospheric packaging (MAP) is an effective technology extending the
shelf life of packaged foods without the need for added preservatives.
Therefore, this type of packaging is used for packaging food & beverages
and healthcare products. Especially the food products packaged using these
packaging contain fewer preservatives compared to canned food products, which,
as a result, increases its popularity among health-conscious consumers.

Modified atmospheric packaging witnesses a considerable
demand that leads to driving its market valuation on the global platform.
Increasing consumption of processed food items and ready-to-eat food products
is a key driving force behind the market's growth. With their increasing
applications in the packaging of fast-moving consumer goods, food items, and
pharmaceutical products, the market is projected to garner significant traction
in the years to come.
In this regard, Market Research Future (MRFR), in its recent
modified atmospheric packaging market forecast, asserts that the market would
grow at a phenomenal CAGR during the review period (2020 – 2027). Advancements
in related packaging technologies are fostering the growth of the market.
Additionally, changing consumer food preferences led by the increasing
disposable income substantiate the growth of the market.
Segmentation
On the basis of the material, the market has been segmented
into polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene
(PP), ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), and polyethylene (PE). Ethylene Vinyl
alcohol had accounted for the largest share in the material segment of the
global modified atmospheric packaging market. EVOH material offers excellent
gas barrier properties while retaining good processing. EVOH bars oxygen and
retains nitrogen and carbon dioxide used in the modified atmosphere packaging
(MAP). This material also has a very high resistance to oils and preserves
taste and aroma. On the other hand, polyethylene is also the most common
plastic material used in daily life and can contribute to overall market
revenue over the forecast period. Polyethylene is accepted as safe for contact
with foods by FDA and health safety agencies around the world.
On the basis of application, the global modified atmospheric
packaging market is segmented into fruits & vegetables, convenience food,
dairy products, bakery & confectionery, and others. Bakery &
confectionery accounted for the largest share of the global modified
atmospheric packaging market. Bakery products contain a large number of
bread-based products. To increase the shelf life, bread-based products required
a high proportion of carbon dioxide in packaging solutions. Hence, this will
increase the adoption of this technology during the estimated period. Recently,
Stewart Systems launched a bulk packaging system for buns with MAP for
fast-food service restaurants. The air in the packaging is removed with a vacuum
and the bag is filled with nitrogen gas for extending the life of buns by 21
days.
On the basis of the gases, the market has been segmented
into carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, and others. Carbon dioxide is the most
important gas in food packaging under modified atmospheric packaging.
Global MAP Market – Regional Analysis
North America dominates the global modified atmospheric
packaging market due to the surging demand for wrapped food and packaged food
items. Besides, increasing concern about the hygienic packaging, rising uses of
MAP to reduce contamination during handling, and the Food Safety Modernization
Act by the government are major modified atmospheric packaging market
trends.
Europe stands second in terms of the global modified
atmospheric packaging market revenue. Germany is one of the top meat producers
and exporters of pork and beef in the EU, creating substantial market demand.
This has increased the need for proper meat packaging, which drives the
modified atmospheric packaging market growth.
The Asia Pacific region accounts for a prominent
space in modified atmospheric packaging market statistics. The rapid growth in
the packaging business due to the burgeoning food & beverages industry
fosters the MAP demand. Additionally, the growing urban population and high
disposable income increase the demand for packaged food and beverages.
China, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, and India are the major
contributor to the MAP market in Asia Pacific. China holds the largest share in
the regional market due to rapid growth in urbanization and industrial
development.
Global Modified Atmospheric Packaging Market– Competitive
Landscape
Highly competitive, the MAP market appears to be fragmented
due to the presence of several large and small-scale players. Acquisition,
partnership, technology launch, and expansion are some strategies that these
players adopt to gain an edge over their competitors.
Major Players
Players leading the global MAP market include CVP Systems
Inc. (US), Linde AG (Germany), Total Packaging Solutions, LLC (US), Hayssen
Flexible Systems (US), Berry Plastics Corporation (US), Dansensor A/S (Demark),
Praxair Inc. (US), Ilapak Packaging Machinery (Switzerland), Sealed Air
Corporation (US), Coveris Holdings SA (Luxembourg), Bemis Company Inc. (US),
Linpac Packaging Limited (UK), Winpak Ltd. (Canada), Amcor Limited (Australia),
and Robert Reiser & Co., Inc. (US).

Industry/Innovation/Related News:
August 06, 2020 --- Air Products and Chemicals,
Inc. (the US), an international chemical company, conducted research that has
shown that the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) used in Modified Atmosphere
Packaging (MAP) can be reduced to as low as 20% while still maintaining the
ability to extend the shelf life of food products.
The research clarified the relationship between shelf life
and the reduction of CO2 in the MAP mix. It evaluated several gas mixtures with
different CO2 concentrations to determine the lowest CO2 content to prolong
food shelf life.
